The building from which this design originated was built in the mid-19th century on the site of the infamous Marshalsea Prison, which for 500 years was known as the place where London's debtors were incarcerated, including Charles Dickens' father in 1824. From four layers of wallpaper stuck together, this is the oldest found. The Moorish-influenced Gothic grid pattern was the first wallpaper to adorn the walls of one of the buildings, built in the late 1870s to replace the prison.
