Product details
This fragment of a leather wallcovering with embossed print is based on one of the oldest documents in the English Heritage wallpaper archive. It actually dates from a time before wallpaper existed. The panels concerned were painted leather, usually with a relief flower motif. This was a popular, yet expensive, form of decoration in the late 16th and 17th centuries. The panels were sewn together to make large-scale, decorative wall coverings. This happened in the same way, as wallpaper strips are hung next to each other to create a more impressive statement.
