Product details
This fragment of an embossed leather wallcovering is based on one of the oldest documents in the English Heritage wallpaper archive. It actually dates back to a time before wallpaper existed. The panels concerned were of painted leather, usually with a floral relief motif. This was a popular but expensive form of decoration in the late 16th and 17th centuries. The panels were sewn together to create large-scale, decorative wall coverings. This was done in the same way, as wallpaper strips are hung side by side to make an even more impressive statement.
